CHAPTER NEWSLETTER | FALL 2024

Zeta Phi Chapter has worked to accomplish many things this semester and has been making small improvements toward our goals of obtaining Rock Chapter Status and Organization of the Year.
One area of improvement is the chapter’s public relations. We have been using Instagram to share Meet Exec Monday posts and some of Zeta Phi’s accomplishments. We held our first Halloween 4K, which raised over $2,000 through the run and T-shirt sales. The chapter also has members at the Bradley University Homecoming soccer game. hosted a Philanthropy Week from September 16-20, where we held a Krispy Kreme Donut sale, a gift basket raffle, Pie-A-SNU, and a car wash. These events helped raise nearly $1,000 toward our $20,000-plus goal. Additionally, the chapter has participated in multiple service events, including card and blanket making with Chi Omega. Our cards were given to children at OSF Hospital, while the blankets were donated to a local homeless shelter.
Relations with the sororities on campus are also on the rise. We gained the help of Pi Beta Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Kappa Delta to participate in our 4K. In return, we have helped Pi Beta Phi with their philanthropic efforts, participated in Gamma Phi Beta’s annual Moonball Tournament, and planned a service event with Kappa Delta for late in the semester.
This year, Zeta Phi introduced a new Sweetheart Program to help better our relationship with organizations we don’t have as much contact with and to give the chapter more hands on deck. The sweethearts helped every day during our Philanthropy Week, helped the candidate class feel welcomed, and have cooked a dinner one weekend every month for the men of our chapter. This program has proven to be a positive addition to Zeta Phi.
Love, honor, truth,
Joshua Dunn ’26 (ZΦ1324), Commander

Supporting Our Chapter: Getting Involved with the Building Corporation
Welcome to the fall 2024 edition brothers, we hold true to our mission: To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth. To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart, and character. To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the fraternity. As alumni, we do this by equipping and supporting the active chapter to achieve organizational and operational excellence.
The on-campus chapter does its part to increase the value of its lifetime membership experience. This year, there have been multiple opportunities for alumni to visit Bradley University and attend Sigma Nu alumni events from the Gameball Run check presentation at the Bradley vs. Illinois State basketball game to the alumni golf outing Newman Golf Course. They also recently celebrated Bradley University Homecoming weekend with an alumni tailgate at the men’s soccer game. Be sure to check out our website at bradleysigmanu.org for news and photos.
As a building corporation, we are always looking for new volunteers who have a passion for maintaining the fraternity house and guiding and preparing these young men to be successful after graduation. If you are interested in being on the building corporation or the advisory board, please let me know.
Fraternally,
Wes Zobrist ’06 (ZΦ1023)

This summer, Sigma Nu lost three of our great fraternity brothers: Jim Bixby ’64 (ZΦ0254), Richard Nitto ’66 (ZΦ0262), and Joseph Palumbo ’74 (ZΦ0418). All three made contributions to the fraternity as pledges, actives and, later, as loyal alumni. They will be remembered for their never-ending support of Bradley and Sigma Nu.
Jim Bixby ’64 (ZΦ254)
For the past 50 years, Jim has served in many roles, including advisor, teacher, counselor, educator, and long-standing member of the building corporation. He provided constant leadership, support, and assistance for Sigma Nu and spent many, many hours at the house assisting pledges and actives alike. Jim worked for almost 30 years as the college counselor at Peoria Manual High School and was the coordinator of admissions for the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was recognized several times through commendations and awards from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps for his recruitment efforts.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen, four children, 10 grandchildren, and many loving cousins.
Richard Nitto ’66 (ZΦ262)
Dick, originally from New Jersey, fell in love with the Midwest, Bradley, and Sigma Nu. His accomplishments at Bradley and later in life are most impressive. Upon graduation, he secured a position at Caterpillar Tractor and had a 33-year career serving in many countries, including Ireland and Australia. While at Bradley, Dick immersed himself in activities, including as student body president and the first president of the Missouri Valley Student Government Association. He stayed involved after graduation as a member of the Sigma Nu Building Corporation for many years and as president of the Bradley University National Alumni Association. Survivors include his wife, Patricia “Trish,” and his two sons, Ryan (Keri) of Wall, N.J., and Reed (Melanie) of Birmingham, Ala., as well as many nephews, nieces, and three grandchildren.
Joseph Palumbo ’74 (ZΦ418)
Joe graduated from Holy Cross High School. When he entered Bradley, he became an active and popular member of Sigma Nu, participating in many house functions, including athletic and social events. He held several offices, including commander of the fraternity. Following his graduation from Bradley, Joe went on to lead a very successful and productive life as a business owner and developer. He is remembered as a visionary and builder, both in his personal and professional life. He loved music and enjoyed hosting his beloved friends, family, and Sigma Nu brothers. His generous heart is remembered by all who knew him.
Joe is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, Christina, Terra, Irene, Patricia, Peter, Joseph, and Jenna; and his brother, Sam.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ZETA PHI
Chuck Weyhenmeyer ’69 on Campaign Support, Building Corporation Involvement
As an undergraduate, Chuck Weyhenmeyer in a house that was still fairly new at the time. Building Corporation involvement kept Chuck aware of the state of the chapter house beyond his college years, and he is grateful to support Zeta Phi Chapter’s current renovation campaign so undergraduates can enjoy modern amenities.
Personal Development
Chuck received several bids during recruitment, and Zeta Phi Chapter was the most attractive option due to the impressive membership and competitiveness in intramural sports. Upperclassmen set an example of leadership within the house, which compelled Chuck to pursue positions in the student senate and political clubs. After graduation, Chuck began a master’s degree in public administration before three years of active duty in the U.S. Army.
Upon returning to the University of Illinois Springfield, he finished his degree and went on to work in three state government agencies. Chuck spent 25 years leading and managing information systems development projects for the Department of Revenue while serving 24 years in the Army and Army Reserve before retiring as a Colonel in 1994.
Helping the House
When Chuck and his wife attended an alumni event in 1994, he approached Jim Bixby ’64 (ZΦ254) about opportunities to help the Building Corporation. That began 30 years of service to Zeta Phi, including multiple years as Building Corporation president.
“What we had done over years were several small upgrades. After 50 years, it was time to do something major, as the mechanical systems were beyond their life expectancy,” Chuck said. The chapter’s renovation campaign is a way to maintain the original structure of the house while providing safe and comfortable accommodations for today’s members.

Chuck sees campaign support as a way to preserve Zeta Phi Chapter while ensuring a strong future, and he urges fellow alumni to stop by the house while supporting Phase III fundraising.
Renovation progress has elevated Zeta Phi as a premier chapter house at Bradley University, benefiting recruitment efforts amongst a smaller freshman class.
“We have a solid, quality group who has had a great GPA and is once again in the running to be a Rock Chapter. I think this reflects well on the leadership of the alumni advisory board and the commitment of former faculty adviser Shelly Peters and current advisor Colleen Splitter.”

Chuck wants to thank Jim Bixby,
Gary Bergman ’69 (ZΦ340), AJ Brown ’06 (ZΦ1012), and Wes Zobrist ’06 (ZΦ1023) for their tremendous campaign support. You can discuss the renovation campaign with Chuck at [email protected].
