CHAPTER NEWSLETTER  |  SPRING 2024

The current semester has been one of growth and progress above all else for the current Zeta Phi members. We had the unfortunate passing of brother Jim Bixby who touched countless Sigma Nu’s across several decades and was truly committed to the mission of our fraternity. Many current members attended the celebration of life held in his honor and recently put up a new plaque at the landing of the stairs, dedicating the chapter house to Jim. Despite this unfortunate passing the men of the chapter that Mr. Bixby has helped to influence remain dedicated to serving the Bradley community. We also placed 2nd in grades among the other 13 fraternities.  This fall we saw the chapter have one of the largest turnouts for our scholarship dinner incentive we’ve seen in several years. Pictures of the attendees of the dinner can be found as well!

Gameball also wrapped up with us once again with us receiving an astonishing level of support from all that donated. We also wanted to give a special thanks to the Zeta Phi alumni community who we thank for their continued support. We crossed $20,000  raised this semester for OSF Almost Home Kids for a third year in a row. Attached are also pictures from the game when the check was presented. Due to scheduling conflicts the run has yet to be set, but the date will be communicated once it is planned. In the spirit of looking ahead we also have a quote from a newly initiated Freshman, Logan Vargas ZΦ1329 on what Sigma Nu means to him.

We also just placed 2nd overall in Greek Week for the Spring 2024 semester. Attached are pictures from throughout the week which saw us paired with Pi Beta Phi, Phi Kappa Tau, and Phi Beta Sigma. The men of the Zeta Phi chapter participated in a dodgeball tournament, card writing campaign, and Greek Sing which was a blast to enjoy with our other Greek friends! We look forward to the next events held by the IFC Programming board and especially to rush in the Fall 2024 semester.

Looking Ahead
With the current Executive Board’s term almost at an end, there are a few more goals we have that we’d like to see accomplished before leaving office. First and foremost the Commander’s Newsletter which will be an independent separate newsletter sent out to current members and parents each month reviewing the prior month and recapping events. This is in an effort to increase transparency between the chapter and parents, as well as further keep them in the loop and promote their involvement. We also look forward to reinstituting the Zeta Phi Hall of Honor, and inducting special alumni into our Order of the White Rose. This opportunity will be one for alumni to be recognized and honored forever in the chapter house. Looking ahead Rush is currently being planned by IFC and events such as block party and welcome week are currently being scheduled. With that in mind the Zeta Phi chapter is also asking all alumni with potential connections to share their information with the Recruitment Chairmen whose information will be attached. This would help us connect with potential Zeta Phi before they are on campus and build a healthy transition to college life. As always thanks to our alumni for their countless contributions to us and the mission of Sigma Nu.

We are also nearly finished with the Pursuit of Excellence nationals year-in-review program and have high hopes for a rock chapter this year. Last year we were only one category from receiving the prestigious honor from headquarters and this year the Executive Board attacked it early to ensure a rock chapter is in the future. We also thank our alumni for their work in reviewing those documents and for their continued collaboration with the Executive Board and active chapter in general.

Sigma Nu has been a great addition to my life and will be for years to come. The candidate process has truly transformed me into a greater leader than I could’ve imagined. I can’t express how happy I am to lead me and my class in the near future. Being initiated has brought deep feelings of joy, understanding that I have finished a process that so many before me have gone through as well. I’m happy to be done and I’m happy with the way being a candidate has shaped me and my thinking. Ultimately, I’m excited to move the needle with our chapter and push us forward each and every day.

CAMPAIGN ENTERS FINAL PHASE

Continuing Our Philanthropy Success
New Ways to Get Involved

Undergraduates Do Their Part at 1300 W. Fredonia

Our Campaign for Sigma Nu has entered the third and final phase, aiming to secure $1.75 million for the complete renovation of our fraternity house at Bradley University. We’ve achieved a remarkable milestone with $1.25 million already contributed by 90 of our 1,400 living alumni. Now, we call on all Sigma Nu brothers and friends to join us in raising the remaining $500,000 to finalize the project by Summer 2024.

Phase III Highlights:
We plan to construct a two-story addition to our house. The lower level will include a formal chapter room, supplementary storage, and central air conditioning. The upper level will provide an additional group restroom with five shower stalls, and a dedicated exercise room. This new addition will enclose the pit area while still providing a small patio area for grilling and lounging.

Impactful Achievements:
The renovations have already positively influenced our active chapter. This semester, we welcomed one of the best classes on campus, excelling academically and ranking #1 in grades. Your contributions have played a crucial role in this success.

Celebrating Together:
Our active chapter celebrated Bradley University Homecoming weekend with an alumni cookout. Stay updated on news and events at bradleysigmanu.org.

Your Support Matters:
If you haven’t contributed or wish to increase your gift, please consider doing so before December 31, 2023. All donations are tax-deductible, and donors will be recognized on a life-time plaque displayed in the fraternity upon Phase III completion.

Let’s unite as Sigma Nu brothers to ensure the success of our campaign and the lasting legacy of our fraternity at Bradley University.

Fraternally,
Wes Zobrist ’06 (ZΦ1023)

My name is Sean Coen, and I am honored to serve as the philanthropy chairman for our fraternity. I want to start by expressing my appreciation for the incredible work of my predecessor, Dylan Makare ’25 (ΖΦ1311).

We achieved outstanding results under Dylan’s leadership, raising an impressive $21,175. This secured us the highest dollar amount raised for philanthropy on campus for the second consecutive year. Dylan set a remarkable standard for our fraternity on campus, and I am inspired by his dedication and accomplishments to keep Sigma Nu on top.

Alumni Support
I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all donors who contributed to philanthropic efforts last year. Your generosity and commitment to our fraternity’s mission have significantly impacted our community and beyond. Your support allows us to make a difference in the lives of those we serve, and we cannot thank you enough. As we gear up for a new year, we are determined to continue the legacy of excellence that Dylan has established.

Fundraising Plans
One exciting development this year is the alumni class competition. While the details are still being worked out, we have some exciting rewards in mind for the winning class. These include the opportunity for TV recognition, an exclusive dinner with select executive board members, and a prestigious plaque in the scholarship room recognizing the highest donating class. Notably, this plaque will also feature the name of our highest individual donor.

I want to emphasize that these plans are not yet set in stone, but I encourage all alumni to rally your classes and prepare your checkbooks. This competition promises to be an exciting and engaging way for alumni to come together and support our philanthropic endeavors.

In the coming months, we will provide further updates on the competition and our ongoing philanthropic initiatives. I invite you all to stay engaged, attend our events, and join us in making a positive impact on our community.

Once again, thank you for your continued support, I am excited to work together to achieve even greater heights in philanthropy this year. Together, we can make a difference that extends far beyond the walls of our fraternity.

Fraternally,
Sean Coen ’26 (ΖΦ1326)

Decades of Fraternal Devotion
JIM BIXBY ’64 (ZΦ254) SUPPORTS ZETA PHI AND THE HOUSE RENOVATION

“I participated as a donor for the house renovation project because those who went before me and built the new house, by their example, showed me what was expected when my turn came up.”

Hailing from Peoria, Jim Bixby ’64 (ZΦ254) was already familiar with Bradley University and Greek life before enrolling in 1962. Going through recruitment, Jim initially chose a different fraternity but quickly recognized a better fit in Sigma Nu. “When I visited Sigma Nu, I became aware that many likeminded high school friends were active members,” Jim said. His peers convinced him to check out Sigma Nu, and Jim still considers it one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
To this day, Jim has been glad to remain connected with Zeta Phi Chapter and show his support in various ways, including The Campaign for Sigma Nu.

UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCES
Gaining leadership practice, Jim served as pledge marshal and had a stint on the IFC Executive Council as director of interfraternity sports. From success in academics and athletics to talent show and sing competition victories, Jim enjoyed the years he spent with “the most talented and caring group of people with whom I have ever been associated.”
Housemother Elizabeth McFarland, better known as Granny Bell, also contributed to the personal development of Zeta Phi members. Jim and fellow brothers considered her the best housemother of any organization on campus.

LIFE BEYOND COLLEGE
With a 56-year career in education, Jim has been an elementary teacher, school principal, high school counselor, and more, even serving five years as the dean of students at a small private college. He credits his Zeta Phi experience for putting him on the right track for a successful career path.
“In the community, I am the Central Illinois coordinator of admission for the USMA at West Point New York.” Jim is an active member of Rotary and an extraordinary communion minister. For 25 years, he has also been host of the state high school basketball finals. His community service over the years also led to his receiving the Award of Advocacy from the Children’s Hospital of Central Illinois.

SUPPORTING ZETA PHI
In fall 1967, Jim was named president of the newly formed house corporation. To this day, Jim has served as a member and was even recognized by Sigma Nu National as the National House Corporation Man of the Year.
“I never could have done it without the magnificent support of George Shaheen ’66 (ZΦ265), Chuck Weyhenmeyer ’69 (ZΦ322), Gary Bergman ’69 (ZΦ340), Sam Palumbo ’76 (ZΦ446), and AJ Brown ’06 (ZΦ1012).” Fellow longtime alumni have been by Jim’s side as key components of Zeta Phi’s growth over the years, and he appreciates Wesley Zobrist ’06 (ZΦ1023) stepping up to manage the house renovation project while serving as president. Jim’s contribution to The Campaign for Sigma Nu is a testament to his appreciation for the chapter. “I have been in the shadows, supporting Gary, Gerry Shaheen ’66 (ZΦ264), and Joe Palumbo ’74 (ZΦ418) in the fundraising efforts for the house renovation,” Jim explained.

Aside from financial support and house corporation involvement, Jim enjoys frequent communication with many alumni from his era.

You can contact Jim and chat about the campaign at [email protected].

ZETA PHI AIMS HIGH Brothers Promote Success and Connection

Over the summer, our brothers worked hard to clean, organize, paint, and build a new bench during Work Week. The bench was an exciting and enjoyable project for everyone. We also held our first-ever Homecoming alumni event, which was a great success and saw most of the newly graduated class of 2023 return. On November 11, we welcomed our loved ones to the house for Parent’s Weekend and had a wonderful silent auction and dinner at Alexander’s.

ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENT
Sigma Nu took the top GPA spot again in spring 2023! This accolade was only made possible through the hard work and sacrifice of the active members. I could not be prouder of the environment of academic excellence our chapter fosters, and I look forward to continuing to instill these academic values in future generations.
All 11 new candidates from the class of 2027 have been assigned an active student mentor to better facilitate the shift from pre-undergraduate life to the college setting. The chapter also held its scholarship dinner for those who achieved a 3.5 term GPA or higher, which was a great time as always.

BUILDING OUR BONDS
Our phenomenal advisor, Colleen Splitter, organized a scavenger hunt for the active members. Brothers broke up into teams to engage with the Bradley campus by solving riddles, taking pictures, and familiarizing new members with our campus, its rich history, and how it relates to Sigma Nu as a fixture of the Bradley community.
I could not be more honored to lead this historic chapter for the upcoming year. We have raised the bar for what fraternal service is at Bradley and will continue to do so. Through philanthropic efforts, community service, and academic excellence, Zeta Phi Chapter will continue to serve as the premier men’s fraternity at Bradley.
Thank you to our members, parents, guardians, and especially alumni for your continued sacrifice and support. To our alumni, the collegiate chapter looks forward to catching up at our spring golf outing!

Fraternally,
Alexander Ortega ’25 (ZΦ1314)
Eminent Commander

Setting a Standard of Brotherhood
ZETA PHI GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Brothers gather for Zeta Phi’s scavenger hunt.

The men of Sigma Nu continue to raise the bar on campus. With Zeta Phi men serving on Interfraternity Council and Student Senate, working in various departments on campus, and holding membership in academic organizations, their leadership and presence are known at Bradley.

RECRUITMENT SUCCESS
Recruitment began with dedicated training sessions in August, which paid off with the addition of 12 new members. The brothers are quickly learning the ideals and principles of Sigma Nu while fitting in well with other members and staying involved. Men have been paired up for academic success with another brother with the same or similar degree to serve as a resource. Plans are already underway for philanthropy efforts and Game Ball fundraising. We will have more exciting information to share soon.

FINDING A BALANCE
After receiving recognition as the Greek organization that raised the most money and had the top GPA on campus last spring, goals are set to continue to strive for Rock Chapter status. To balance their academic and community efforts, men have ensured time for brotherhood and fun.

This September, members participated in a scavenger hunt filled with laughter and teamwork to identify various locations on campus. Fall break provided the men a chance to rest, study, and breathe while focusing on the remainder of the semester.

I’m quite proud of their current efforts and plans. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions.

Love, honor, truth,
Colleen Splitter
